Barrel Stave crafts are an important part of Sanderson Pens and Turnings. At the beginning of Murray’s woodworking career he purchased several oak wine barrels from some Niagara Wineries. The barrels were taken apart to get at the barrel staves. These in turn were used to craft candle holders, trays, clocks, bottle stoppers and wine bottle holders. A selection of these items are pictured below.

The wood is oak. It has taken on a distinctive hue from the wine. The wine has penetrated the wood and turned one side purple. The other side is rough oak.
One winery had oak whiskey barrels. There is less staining from the whiskey but the barrel has a deep black from the barrel being charred. This provides a distinctive taste to the whiskey and a distinctive look to the stave.
